Fenerbahce arrived in Denizli on Friday afternoon, one day ahead of their clash with the Denizlispor Roosters. Fenerbahce will looking to pick up three points and cut their deficit in the Turkcell Super Lig in half. The Yellow Canaries are currently six points behind Sivasspor and Galatasaray for the top spots in the Turkcell Super Lig.

Denizlispor is not far behind, currently sitting in fifth place. A win at home could move them only one point behind the reigning champions. Fenerbahce and Denizlispor will kick off at 19:00 (12 Noon EST in the U.S.) from Denizli Ataturk Stadium.

Fenerbahce Denies Lugano Transfer Rumors

Fenerbahce Denies Lugano Transfer Rumors
By Nathan L. Redd

As expected, Fenerbahce issued a statement Thursday denying the rumors of defender Diego Lugano's transfer to Italian side Juventus. It was reported earlier this week that some officials connected to Juventus had expressed a desire in bringing the Uruguayan national to Torino during the January transfer window.

Fenerbahce, in the statement, declared "We want to underline the fact that we are not planning to sell any of our players to another club right now. Most importantly, Fenerbahce has not received any offer considering Lugano's transfer to another club. We want to inform everyone that these transfer rumours are completely false."

With the statement confirming what was previously believed, fans can expect to see Lugano in a yellow and navy uniform for a long time to come.

Is Ronaldo Considering a Move to Kadikoy?

Is Ronaldo Considering a Move to Kadikoy?
By Nathan L. Redd

When his contract with AC Milan expires at the end of the year, Brasilian superstar Ronaldo will be looking for a new destination. He's been linked with a move to lowly American side Los Angeles Galaxy to join his friend David Beckham, but one report indicates that he might wear the yellow and navy next year.

Media outlet Controcampo reports that Fenerbahce's Roberto Carlos is trying to persuade his fellow Brasilian to join him in Kadikoy next year. "Ronie, join me in Istanbul," said Roberto Carlos according to the report. "At Fenerbahce, you will be covered in gold."

Ronaldo was linked to a move to Kadikoy last season but no deal was ever made. The lure of a shorter season with less pressure in American "soccer" could tempt Ronaldo. However, the competition level is among the world's lowest and Ronaldo could be looking for more international glory. With the number of Brasilians on the roster and legend Zico commanding the team, Ronaldo could very well be interested in moving to the European giants Fenerbahce instead.

Fener Puts Knockout Stage On Hold

Fener Puts Knockout Stage On Hold
Fans Must Wait to Celebrate
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce went to Milano on Tuesday hoping to celebrate their first trip to the UEFA Champions League knockout round. Instead they returned home with questions and a humbling 3-0 loss to Inter Milan.

Selcuk Sahin tried to put Fener on the board early with a shot just two minutes in, but his ball missed the mark. Ten minutes later Roberto Carlos had an effort on goal that was saved. The first half was less fluid than the first leg in Istanbul, and neither team could find the back of the net. Fenerbahce looked tentative and more stressed than a team in good shape to qualify. Both teams had chances to score, but neither could find the ball through to put themselves up. The halftime scoreline remained 0-0 giving Fenerbahce confidence heading into the break.

With PSV Eindhoven jumping out to a decisive lead over CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahce knew they would need to grab three points in Milano to seal their position in the next round. However, Inter used the second half to take charge and book their spot instead. The second half began with a number of fouls, and Fenerbahce's Diego Lugano picked up the first yellow card of the game in the 50th minute. Alex de Souza would have an effort on goal four minutes later that missed the mark. Less than a minute later, however, Inter's Julio Cruz found the back of the net to put the Italian side up first. A cross into the box was deflected off of Cruz past Volkan Demirel.

Zico would attempt to strengthen his midfield a few minutes later, bringing in Stephen Appiah for Mehmet Aurelio. Instead, four minutes later, superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored to give Inter a decisive 2-0 lead. Cristian Chivu provided a beautiful cross into Ibrahimovic that he soared past Volkan Demirel into the back of the net. Looking for an offensive spark, Zico would replace Semih Senturk with Colin Kazim-Richards a few seconds later for Fenerbahce's second substitution. A sloppy game continued as both teams committed a number of fouls, and Fener defender Gokhan Gonul picked up a yellow card in the 78th minute.

Looking for a last-ditch effort to pick up two quick goals, Zico made his final substitution in the 83rd minute by replacing Deivid de Souza with Tumer Metin. Colin Kazim-Richards would take a shot five minutes later, but his ball was off-target. As the game went into stoppage time, Inter would add a third goal by Luis Antonio Jimenez, providing the Inter player with his first-ever goal in European competition. Alex de Souza would get one more look two minutes later, but the final whistle was blown shortly after providing Inter with a decisive 3-0 lead. With the win, Inter booked their spot in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages. PSV Eindhoven also defeated CSKA Moscow to move within one point of Fenerbahce for the second and last spot.

Fenerbahce must make fans wait to celebrate, as they must take care of business in two weeks against CSKA Moscow in Kadikoy. PSV Eindhoven will host Inter Milan in their final game. A win by Fenerbahce will guarantee them a spot in the next round. A draw, accompanied by a PSV / Inter draw, would also book them a spot. A loss by PSV to Inter would make the Fenerbahce scoreline unimportant and advance them as well.

The game ended with both teams getting a number of shots. Inter finished with 16 shots to Fener's 11, but only three of Fenerbahce's shots were on target. A total of 29 fouls were committed in the game; 18 of which came from Inter. The Milano side also controlled the ball for 53% of the time compared to Fener's 47%.

After the game, Inter Manager Roberto Mancini said "It was a nice birthday gift from my team because it was not an easy game at all. We made it look easy at the end of the game but it was very difficult, at least until we scored the first goal. Fenerbahce were very organized and are very good at keeping possession with their technically skilled players. It was very difficult to break through and everything changed only after breaking the deadlock."

Before the match, Mancini indicated that the team had worked hard to try to stop Alex de Souza from taking over. Mancini was pleased after the win for his team's efforts. "Alex is very difficult to mark because he moves a lot from attack to a deeper position, that's why I fielded [Cristian] Chivu in midfield so he could help the defenders when Alex was moving back. Mancini also was confident that his opponent would join them in the knockout stage. "I think Fenerbahçe will beat CSKA and will qualify regardless of our result" he told reporters after the game.

Fenerbahce Manager Zico was disappointed in his team's performance, but he knows they still have a shot to advance. "We played well only for 45 minutes when we were very well-balanced. We started the second half well and had a good chance with Alex. But then we conceded the first goal, lost our calm and started to miss many easy passes. Against a team like Inter you risk conceding many goals if you play like that. They scored three and could have scored even more in the final part of the game. This game was important but not decisive, the decisive one is against CSKA in December. However we have to be calm and confident because we are in this situation only by our own merits and I think we can make the decisive step against CSKA. When you concede a goal you have to react because a match lasts 90 minutes, not 45. I think we have to play as we did in the first half today but then we didn't have to give up once we were 1-0 down" Zico told reporters.

Fenerbahce must now put the loss behind them and get back to business in the Turkcell Super Lig. The Sari Lacivert will travel to Denizli this weekend to take on the Denizlispor Roosters. That game is scheduled for Saturday at 19:00 (12 Noon EST in the U.S.).

UEFA MatchDay: Fenerbahce vs. Inter Milan

UEFA MatchDay: Fenerbahce vs. Inter Milan
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce's historic UEFA Champions League campaign can take a monumental step on Tuesday. The club is looking to advance into the knockout stage for the first time in club history, and Fener is confident heading into the match.

Although both teams are in excellent shape to qualify, Inter Milan knows all too well how strong Fenerbahce are. The Sari Lacivert defeated Inter 1-0 in Kadikoy, a scoreline that didn't reflect the actual domination by Fenerbahce. With the return in Milano, Inter are cautious of the Turk giants.

Inter defender Ivan Cordoba missed the first match, but he's been keeping tabs on their opponents since. "It's a match where we will have to conduct the rhythm. Fenerbahce play with great tempo, largely based on the playmaking skills of Alex de Souza, which means we have to take the game to them rather than the other way around" he told reporters earlier in the week.

Cordoba is expecting a different look than Inter's Serie A opponents usually give them. "In the Champions League, teams tend to attack more than in Serie A," he said. "CSKA Moskva gave it a real go, scored two early goals and had nothing to lose. It means you can't afford to make mistakes in the Champions League because if you do, before you know it, you're out. We're very determined. A win will draw a line under qualifying and that is a huge motivation for us."

Fenerbahce are anticipating a different style also. Turkcell Super Lig teams tend to lock down on Fenerbahce and play in a tight, defensive mode. Zico's squad are expecting a more fluid, freestyle type of game on Tuesday from Roberto Mancini's side. "Fenerbahce are a really well-drilled side," Mancini said. "They play with great rhythm and have many Brasilians who are extremely skilful and good at keeping the ball. Alex de Souza makes them tick and passes the ball around nicely; Roberto Carlos and Gokcek Wederson combine well down the left, and Deivid de Souza is an obvious threat after scoring against us last time. We need to be aware of these players and press them hard. We have to take the initiative and be physically strong against them. It's no fluke that they are second in the group - they are a good side. We want to win on Tuesday to wrap up qualification but it won't be easy."

On the other side, Zico knows that Fenerbahce have little room for error against their Milano counterparts. "The main thing is not to make any mistakes or to leave space for Inter. If you give great players space, they punish you. However, we don't know how to play on the counterattack. We don't sit and watch – we are always looking to go forward and score. We've beaten them once and hopefully will do so again."

The first leg's hero, Deivid de Souza, is back in the lineup after missing the last match, a 2-0 defeat of PSV Eindhoven. Uruguayan defender Diego Lugano is also back after missing that same match. Mateja Kezman is out for Fenerbahce as he is still recovering from knee surgery. Deniz Baris will miss the match with a back injury. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Stephen Appiah, who is still recovering from injury himself. Zico was unsure of the status of recently-capped defender Gokhan Gonul, who suffered a minor ankle injury last week. For Inter, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to be back in the lineup. Patrick Viera, Luis Figo, Hernan Crespo, and Dejan Stankovic have all suffered from injuries recently as well.

Inter Milan will be looking to reach the knockout phase for the fourth time in five years. Fenerbahce is looking for their first trip to the round of sixteen. Fenerbahce holds a four-point lead over PSV Eindhoven, and Fener still have a remaining home game against CSKA Moscow in Kadikoy. CSKA Moscow has already been eliminated from the competition. If CSKA Moscow defeats PSV Eindhoven today, both Fenerbahce and Inter Milan will advance regardless of their scoreline.

Fenerbahce and Inter Milan kickoff at 20:45 local time from Milano, Italia (21:45 in Turkiye; 2:45 PM EST in the U.S.). The game is available on a pay-per-view basis from UEFA.com. The anticipated lineups are:

Fenerbahce:

Zico Would Welcome Adriano in Kadikoy

Zico Would Welcome Adriano in Kadikoy
By Nathan L. Redd
Inter Milan star Adriano has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce for several months, and while no deal has been done, Fener boss Zico would welcome his fellow Brasilian to Kadikoy. "Adriano may have made a mistake or two, but if he joins us here in Turkiye then he can return to greatness. If I could pick any player for my team other than Kaka and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it would be Adriano" he told reporters.
Zico feels that despite his problems in Milano, the Brasilian star could regain his form for the Sari Lacivert. "His problem is that acting unprofessionally off the pitch makes everything a lot tougher, but I believe that he knows that now" Zico told reporters.
Adriano won't get a chance to compete against Fenerbahce on Tuesday, as he was left off of Inter's European squad. In addition to Fenerbahce, several other European giants have also been linked with a move for Fenerbahce during the January transfer window.

Former Juventus Captain Wants Lugano in Torino

Former Juventus Captain Wants Lugano in Torino
By Nathan L. Redd

Diego Lugano has been no stranger to transfer rumors over the last six months, and recently he was linked with a move to Italian scandalous side Juventus. One former Juventus captain is hoping his old club will make a move for the Fenerbahce star.

"Lugano has been playing for long enough in Turkiye and at a high level. He is now mature enough to command defences in Italy" said former captain Paolo Montero. Montero seems to be in denial about the state of Italian calcio when compared to Turk futbol. Italy is going through a public relations nightmare with seemingly a new scandal each week. The dark cloud hovering over Italy also seems to be impacting their ability to bring in new transfers, as numerous international stars have squashed rumors connecting them to Italy.

Juventus, just promoted after last year's relegation campaign for match-fixing, are trying to clean up their image, not an easy task for a club linked with controversy in the past. While the Torino side were playing in Serie B last season, Lugano was making a name for himself on the international stage at Fenerbahce. This season Lugano has become an even hotter commodity with Fenerbahce's recent European success in UEFA Champions League.

Fenerbahce seems to have no interest in letting Lugano go, and they don't have to with their current financial state. Montero and Juventus, on the other hand, seem to be creating their own rumors of bringing in unlikely stars in an effort to clean up their image and enhance their reputation. The January transfer window will tell whether or not Juventus is still the big club they believe they are.

Is Mancini Upset at Inter's Team Doctors?

Is Mancini Upset at Inter's Team Doctors?
By Nathan L. Redd

When Inter Milan host Fenerbahce later today, Roberto Mancini's squad will be without several usual playmakers. Inter is still in great position to move on, but according to the Turkish Daily News, Mancini recently took a swipe at the team's own medical staff, claiming they were keeping players off the pitch. The claims offer yet another black eye to Italian calcio, already suffering from public relations problems following the recent death of a Lazio fan.

Mancini's side scored a big 2-1 victory over surprising Atalanta over the weekend, but Mancini wasn't pleased going into the gigantic Fenerbahce matchup. According to the recent Turkish Daily News report, Mancini believes team doctors are sabotaging the team's chances by keeping important players off the pitch. Mancini also told England's Sky Sports "We knew it would be a hard match because we had not played for two weeks, we have some injuries and other players were returning from international duty."

Forgotten throughout Inter's injury troubles is the fact that Fenerbahce is also not completely fit heading into the game. They have played without their starting goalkeeper for most of the season, and star midfielder Stephen Appiah is still not 100%. Striker Mateja Kezman is still recovering from knee surgery, and Deniz Baris and Tumer Metin have also both missed time recently. Despite the injuries, Fenerbahce and Inter Milan will battle it out later tonight in Milano for UEFA Champions League group supremacy.

Turkiye's Dept. of Religious Affairs Objects to Zico's Comments

Turkiye's Dept. of Religious Affairs Objects to Zico's Comments
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce Manager Zico recently commented on the fans of Turkiye with his statement comparing futbol to the zealous passion of religion. When asked about how Turk fans compared with other fans he's encountered, Zico stated "Turks raise football to the level of religion." Zico's intentions were to highlight the passion and devotion of Turk fans rather than actually compare futbol to religion. However, Turkiye's Department of Religious Affairs took offense to his comments.

The department issued a statement recently saying "...comparing futbol to religion is gruesome. Extremity is harmful. Futbol is an important sport and should bring love and brotherhood instead of fight and extremity."

Anyone who has ever encountered a Fenerbahce vs. Galatasaray Derby knows the importance of the rivalry to Turk fans. On a smaller scale, even second division teams like Izmir's Altay have passionate, devoted fans who live and breathe Turk futbol. A scan through the fan pages of facebook will find many who list their religious preferences as "Fenerbahce" or any number of other Super Lig teams. Zico's comments were intended to show the commitment of Turk fans while warning that futbol is a beloved game, short of true faith or religion.

Appiah Still Trying to Find Form

Appiah Still Trying to Find Form
By Nathan L. Redd

Midfielder Stephen Appiah returned to the pitch for the first time earlier this fall, but the Ghana star is still trying to regain his old form after suffering an injury last spring. His playing time with Fenerbahce is increasing, and Appiah returned to Ghana National Team duties recently to help the Black Stars win the Zenith Bank 4-Nation International Tournament. He scored one goal in the tournament, but is still fighting to find his way back.

Appiah told reporters after the tournament that he knows his fitness is not where it needs to be after being sidelined for so long. However, he is confident he'll regain his form while helping Fenerbahce achieve success. “I want to assure you that my knee is fine and I am gradually coming back into the game" Appiah told reporters. "I have played some games for Fenerbahce his season and hope to carry on. Surely I will get there. I know I am not sharp like I used to be."

Despite the struggles, Appiah remains confident in his ability to bounce back and help Fenerbahce and his native Ghana achieve glory this year. "I have to be honest with you. I lacked conditioning because I have just returned from a long layoff and I need to play a lot more to peak. I need more matches to get back my rhythm and I am more than convinced that in no time, I will reach the level you all desire to see."

Appiah will get another chance to shine on the international stage later today in his old stomping grounds of Italy. Fenerbahce will take on Inter Milan in Milano Tuesday in UEFA Champions League action.

Fenerbahce 4 - 2 Ankaraspor: Alex le Sonsuza

Fenerbahce 4 - 2 Ankaraspor: Alex le Sonsuza
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Let's start with a small explanation for the non-Turkish speaker visitors of our website: "Alex'le Sonsuza" is a pun on Alex de Souza's name, meaning "Forever with Alex". I saw this play on words at Antu after I was visiting the forums to observe the general mood of the fans, and was so amused by the aforementioned pun that I decided to carry it to Fenerbahce Worldwide. Also, it is a perfect way to sum up today's game against Ankaraspor: Alex gets what Alex wants. Therefore, he will always have a place in Fenerbahce.

The game started off... Well, with a goal. Just in the third minute of the game Fener was up by one thanks to Alex, who after latching on to a perfect pass by Deivid, went by the goalkeeper and flicked the ball of into the empty goal. It was a classy goal, but it was only a small preview of what more was to come.

When Semih tallied another one for himself, the Fener fans knew that they could sit back and enjoy the rest of the game. A side not is in order here: Semih is by far the most efficient goalscorer of the league: He has 6 goals to his name and 4 assists, and he only started in 7 games this season! There is something special about this player, and Zico and Alex both are vouching for it, so there is no doubt in my mind that he is a very special player. He has been proving this over and over again this season, hopefully, he will continue like this.

The rest of the game was nothing too extraordinary: Fener conceded two and scored two, ending the game 4-2. There were two noteworthy positions here: The first one was Fener's 4th, Alex's 3rd goal, where Vederson tried a long range lob kick, which was barely saved by the Ankaraspor goalie, which in turn was smashed towards the goal by Semih, where it bounced back off the woodwork ending in front of Alex, who feinted once with the ball and then kicked the ball into the same corner over a helpless goalkeeper. The amazing thing was the whole position from the Vederson's start to Alex's finish was completed in less time it took me to tell it. Alex showed his futbol genius by feinting once with the ball, throwing everyone including the goalkeeper off, and then kicking it into the same corner, leaving everyone helpless to do anything. His joyous laughter after the goal was a sight to behold, but was overshadowed by another laughter by Carlos a few minutes later:

The second noteworthy position of the game was when Deivid took the ball into the penalty area and tried unsuccessfully to go around the goalkeeper. The ball again found its way to Alex, who from a long distance tried to lob the ball into the goal. The goalkeeper was again powerless to do anything, but was lucky enough that the ball "licked" the post as we like to say in Turkey and ended up on the wrong side of the woodwork. However, Roberto Carlos, so confident in Alex's ability, was already celebrating the goal with his back to the position. His disappointment when he found out that the ball was not in the net as he hoped, which quickly turned into laughter, was another heart-warming moment in the game.

All in all, it was a very successful performance by Fenerbahce, after a long break for the international week. Some of the key players like Semih and Aurelio were taken out of the game early to preserve their energy for the "real" match of the week against Inter, and some others like Deniz and Gokhan Gonul were out with injuries, so the 4-2 scoreline is a very good one.

Fener put their league campaign back on track after a slow start, and now they are back in the race stronger than ever. This is especially true when you consider today's performance and the time it took place in: Right after the international week and right before a very critical Champions League game.

Fenerbahce is going to be on the pitch again in 3 days, and they will be there to make history. If Fener comes back with a victory from that game, they will take over Galatasaray's record for the team with the most points in a single Champions League campaign. Also, they will secure their qualifying spot out of the group, most likely taking the first place ahead of Inter. Even a draw will be good, since it will ensure qualification for Fenerbahce to the next stage. The confidence amongst the fans is high, and morale in the team is even higher.

Let us wait and see the fruits of this positive atmosphere.

Fenerbahce Ready to Get Back to Business

Fenerbahce Ready to Get Back to Business

By Nathan L. Redd

After a week off for international competition, Fenerbahce is ready to get back to business Saturday against Ankaraspor. While Fenerbahce is looking to inch closer to Sivasspor and Galatasaray in the standings, Ankaraspor is just trying to keep their heads above water. A third of the way into the season, Ankaraspor is second from the bottom with only eight points. They've won only one game this season, losing six and drawing in five contests. They've scored only nine goals in twelve games so far this season.

Seeing Ankaraspor on the schedule might be just what Fenerbahce needs this weekend. Many of the starters may get the day off on Saturday after a tense week of international competition. With a pivotal UEFA Champions League match coming up against Inter Milan, it may be difficult for Fener to focus completely on Ankaraspor. That's just what Ankara Coach Hikmet Karaman is hoping for. Bringing the Leopards to Sukru Saracoglu doesn't look like much of a match on paper, so his team being overlooked by Fener suits him just fine.

Mehmet Yilmaz and company know that they're going to need some pivotal wins in the coming weeks if they are to avoid relegation this season. A huge win over Fenerbahce in Kadikoy could change the momentum for their season and get them headed on the right track. Fenerbahce will face the difficult task of putting forth a great effort only three days before their crucial match at San Siro. If Fenerbahce are to win another Turkcell Super Lig title this year, important wins against teams like Ankaraspor will determine the true character of the team. Saturday's match could give them the opportunity to move closer to that intended goal.

Turk Triumph! Milli Takim Heads for EURO 2008!

Turk Triumph! Milli Takim Heads for EURO 2008!
By Nathan L. Redd

Turkiye's Milli Takim ended the qualification stage for EURO 2008 just the way they had played throughout - lots of drama and a nail-biting finish. In the end, Turkiye put away Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 in Istanbul to qualify for EURO 2008. It's the first major championship Turkiye has qualified for since the 2002 World Cup.

With Norway putting away Malta, Turkiye knew they needed nothing less than a win to qualify. Right before the half, Villareal's Nihat Kahveci struck first to put the Turks up 1-0. Hamit Altintop provided a beautiful cross into the box that Kahveci was able to put into the back of the net. The second half started with Fenerbahce's Semih Senturk picking up a yellow card three minutes in. Bosnia pressured the Turks trying to find an equalizer as the second half wore on. Fatih Terim made his first substitution at the 61-minute mark when he replaced Senturk with Sabri Sarioglu. Hamit Altintop was unable to convert a corner afterwards, and the score continued at 1-0.

With the Norway result in their heads, Turkiye knew they may need another goal to guarantee qualification. Terim had the squad pushing forward, but the Turks also gave Bosnia many opportunities with fouls, allowing Bosnia to gain more chances to tie the game. With fifteen minutes left to play, Terim made another substitution to try to strengthen the squad. Former Fener star Tuncay Sanli came in for Arda Turan with a hope of added offense. Bosnia continued to get opportunities as the match wore down, and Terim replaced Nihat Kahveci with Gokdeniz just before the end of regulation. Neither team was able to penetrate the defense, and after four minutes of stoppage time, the whistle was blown sending the Turks through to EURO 2008.

Turkiye finished with nine shots compared to only three for Bosnia. The game featured a plethora of fouls, with Bosnia committing 22 and Turkiye committing 14. After Bosnia controlled possession for most of the first half, the Turks gained the possession favor in the second half and finished with a 52% possession time.

Fenerbahce's Mehmet Aurelio, Semih Senturk and Gokhan Gonul were all part of Fatih Terim's starting eleven. Former Fenerbahce footballers Rustu Recber and Servet Cetin were also in the starting lineup.

More to come on Turkiye's triumphant victory!

Match Day: Turkiye vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina

Match Day: Turkiye vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina

By Nathan L. Redd

The long road to EURO 2008 qualification comes to an end on Wednesday. Turkiye's Milli Takim has provided no lack of drama as their fate comes down to the final game in Istanbul. A win puts them through to the tournament; a loss or draw will have them needing help from Malta to advance.

Bosnia heads into the match enduring a slump similar to what the Turks have gone through in recent months. They've already been eliminated from EURO 2008 qualification, but Fuad Muzurovic says the Bosnians won't give up without a fight. He told reporters earlier this week "I watched Turkiye's win against Norway on television and it was an extraordinary game. The Turks played their best when it mattered most and justified their favorites' tag alongside Greece. Turkiye are definitely stronger than us, but we won't surrender."

Bosnian captain Zvjezdan Misimovic told reporter this week "Turkiye are inspired by their win in Oslo, but we will try to play as well as we can and get the best result we can, but it's impossible to predict the outcome. The match in Istanbul on Wednesday will be tough."

Turkiye and Bosnia-Herzegovina will kick off at 21:00 (2 PM EST in the U.S.) on Wednesday from Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul.

Wednesday Will Decide Milli Takim's Fate

Wednesday Will Decide Milli Takim's Fate
By Nathan L. Redd

Turkiye's Milli Takim has put their fans through a rollercoaster of emotions over the last year. From a sure bet to qualify to a nose-diving slump, the Turk fans around the world have been registering high blood pressure following Fatih Terim's group. With only one game remaining, the national team controls its own destiny going into Wednesday's clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Prior to Saturday's game in Oslo, Turkish fans were feeling pessimistic about the team's chances to qualify for EURO 2008. The team had been sinking like a ship since the summer, putting their hopes in jeopardy. Despite the slump, they kept their chances alive going into Saturday's match. After falling behind 1-0 early, two straight goals from Emre Belozoglu and Nihat Kahveci allowed the Milli Takim to discard Norway and move into second place in Group C. After months of ups and downs, the team's fate now rests on Wednesday's result in Turkiye.

Terim told reporters after the match "We conceded an early goal and lost a player [İbrahim Kaş] through injury. Despite those setbacks, my players fought like lions against Norway. Our victory showed which side deserves to qualify for EURO 2008. We have not accomplished our mission yet. We have earned a very important and deserved victory. It is not easy for an average team to get an away against Norway."

Terim's group knows that they've put the fans through a myriad of emotions with their up-and-down play. "I think we like to do it the hard way," joked Terim. "The players are well aware they have another crucial game ahead of them but I get the impression that we are returning to our best form." Ironically, Turkiye put forth a tremendous effort despite having several uncapped players on the roster for the Norway match, including Fenerbahce's Gokhan Gonul. There were also key injuries that led many to believe that Norway would prevail over the Turks, especially with the match being in Oslo. "Some of our key midfielders were not with us due to injury and that put a lot of pressure on Emre Belözoglu, Arda Turan, Mehmet Aurélio and Hamit Altintop's shoulders," he added. "They played selflessly. All of my players were stars."

Terim will have the same roster in place for Wednesday's match, including Fenerbahce's Semih Senturk at the forward position. Galatasaray midfielder Sabrı Sarıoğlu will replace the injured İbrahim Kaş in the squad for the game against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Istanbul. Terim has faced a great deal of criticism in recent months for his decisions and the team's poor play, but a spot in EURO 2008 next summer will buy the coach some time and get the critics off his back. A loss on Wednesday could allow Norway to prevail and put heated pressure on the Turkish Futbol Federation to make a change for Terim.

After Saturday's game, Terim put out a plea for Turk fans to gather on the European side of Istanbul for the match. He knows that the passionate Turk fans can make a huge difference in the intimidation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and possibly urge the Milli Takim to victory. "I am making a call to all Turkish people," he said. "We want to see real passionate Turkish supporters on Wednesday against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Not just spectators, but real fans."

Greece has already booked their spot in EURO 2008 from Group C. For Turkiye to advance, they need to win on Wednesday to guarantee their spot. If Norway loses to Malta, Turkiye will not need to win their game. A Norway draw with Malta will also assure that Turkiye advances to EURO 2008. Norway and Malta kick off at 20:00 (21:00 in Turkiye; 2 PM EST in the U.S.) on Wednesday.

Turkiye and Bosnia-Herzegovina will kick off at 21:00 (2 PM EST in the U.S.) on Wednesday from Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul.

Turkiye are favourites to join Greece at UEFA EURO 2008 from Group C after coming from behind to beat Norway in Oslo and leave the Scandinavian side facing qualifying heartache once again.

Hagen opener
Norway had gone ahead on 12 minutes with a stunning overhead kick from defender Erik Hagen, but Turkiye equalised through Emre Belözoglu on 31 minutes before sealing victory courtesy of Nihat Kahveci's strike 14 minutes into the second half.

Turkiye press
Norway have not qualified for a major tournament since UEFA EURO 2000, and after missing out in play-offs for UEFA EURO 2004 and last summer's FIFA World Cup, they kicked off knowing victory would break that miserable run – earning a place in Austria and Switzerland. It was Turkiye, though, who began the brighter, with the lively Hamit Altıntop surging forward and firing a powerful effort just wide on two minutes.

Stunning strike
The foggy conditions did not help the match as a spectacle, but Norway took the lead with a goal of real quality. Steffen Iversen flicked on a free-kick and Hagen, with his back to goal, controlled the ball on his chest before rifling an overhead kick into the roof of the net. John Carew had a header saved as Norway sought a second goal, although Turkey remained dangerous and got back into the game on 31 minutes.

Altıntop impresses
Emre beat his man on the edge of the box, made space and blasted a dipping drive beyond Norway goalkeeper Håkon Opdal. Fatih Terim's men were now in the ascendancy and Altıntop came close again with a long-range attempt on 40 minutes before Morten Gamst Pedersen was thwarted by Turkiye keeper Volkan Demirel at the other end.

Nihat winner
The contest was evenly balanced, and Nihat and Iversen both carried a menace early in the second half as the match resumed at a brisk pace. The Villarreal CF forward saw his first effort saved, yet then gave his side a precious advantage on 59 minutes, receiving the ball from substitute Gökhan Gönül before shooting past Opdal. It proved to be the winner, leaving Turkiye needing three points at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday to qualify. They are second in Group C, one point above Åge Hareide's Norway who visit Malta with their fate now out of their hands.

Match Day: Turkiye vs. Norway

Match Day: Turkiye vs. Norway
By Nathan L. Redd

With EURO 2008 qualifying seemingly slipping out of their grasps, Turkiye's Milli Takim face a must-win situation on Saturday in Group C competition. After a hot start in EURO 2008 qualifying, Turkiye is slumping at exactly the wrong time.

After ten games, Turkiye sits in third place in Group C, but a win in Oslo on Saturday would move them into second place, one point ahead of Norway. Since August, Turkiye has won only one game, with disappointing results against Greece, Moldova, Malta, and Romania. Earlier this spring, they defeated their rivals Greece 4-1 and appeared to be a sure thing to qualify for EURO 2008.

Turkiye will be without Yildiray Basturk for Saturday's match and next week's match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Basturk suffered a thigh strain earlier this week and will be replaced by Denizlispor's Yusuf Simsek. Fenerbahce's Deniz Baris missed training earlier this week with a hip injury, and Serkan Akin is still less than 100% after battling the flu. On the other side of the pitch, Norway will be without midfielder Christian Grindheim who is out with a knee injury.

Turkiye is hoping to make up for their 2-2 draw at home in March. Turkiye scored a late goal in that match to pick up one point. Despite their recent struggles, Turkiye Manager Fatih Terim believes in his players. "We have played a lot of matches like this and come through. I trust and believe in my players" he told reporters earlier this week.

Turkiye and Norway will kick off Saturday from Oslo at 19:00 local time (20:00 in Turkiye; 1 PM EST in the U.S.). The match can be seen in North America live on Setanta Sports.

Valencia Deny Interest in Aurelio

Valencia Deny Interest in Aurelio
By Nathan L. Redd

A report issued today by Goal.com indicates that Spanish side Valencia have denied interest in bringing in a new midfielder during the January transfer window. Last week, Valencia had been linked with interest to Fenerbahce and Milli Takim midfielder Mehmet Aurelio.

Aurelio is one of the longest-tenured Fenerbahce players. The Brasilian-born star acquired Turkish nationality two years ago and took the Turk name "Mehmet" in the process. His experience in the midfield for both Fenerbahce and Turkiye's national team has been widely praised, and his departure from Kadikoy in the near future is highly unlikely.

Fenerbahce striker Mateja Kezman spoke with the club's official website on Thursday and told them his rehab is going well. Kezman is expected to be sidelined for a few more weeks after recovering from a knee injury. He underwent surgery in Qatar recently to correct the injury.

Kezman told Fenerbahce.org "My operation was a huge success. I'm still recovering from surgery at the moment. I also take part in special trainings which help me to get back in form quickly. Next week I will come back to Turkiye to join my teammates. I'm very happy to not be suffering from the injury anymore. In Istanbul I'll start carrying out trainings as soon as possible. I promise to make a fantastic comeback."

FB WW's Policy on Transfer Rumors

FB WW's Policy on Transfer Rumors
By Nathan L. Redd
With the first half of the season winding down and the January transfer window just around the corner, it is the time of year for transfer rumors to run rampant. As previously mentioned in an article by Ozgur Nazilli, Fenerbahce President Aziz Yildirim has issued a statement regarding many of the transfer rumors involving Fenerbahce.
Here at Fenerbahce Worldwide, it's important for us to clarify our stance as well. We report some external stories that indicate a connection with Fenerbahce. However, we don't report all of them, based on the reliability and perceived truth of the source. It is and will continue to be our policy, however, that NO transfer rumor has any validity until Fenerbahce announces it. We report any and all rumors as pure speculation and we believe no rumors have any truth to them until Fenerbahce issues a formal statement.

Are Fenerbahce Looking at Another Goalkeeper?

Are Fenerbahce Looking at Another Goalkeeper?
By Nathan L. Redd

According to a report by Clubcall, Fenerbahce is one of several large clubs evaluating the services of Bolton Goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. The Finnish star has been with English side Bolton for ten years, but his contract ends at the end of the curren season and speculation is that he'll leave the club.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahce are the teams listed in the report as being interested in the 32-year-old Jaaskelainen. Fenerbahce's long-tenured goalkeeper Rustu Recber left at the end of last season, and starting goalkeeper Serdar Kulbilge has been injured for most of this season. Volkan Demirel, who had been heavily criticized in the past, has improved his game and has put many Fenerbahce fans at ease with his performance this year.

Gokhan: "(Milli Takim) Preparations Going Well"
By Nathan L. Redd

Prior to Turkiye's big EURO 2008 qualifiers, first-time participant and Fenerbahce defender Gokhan Gonul spoke with the media during a press conference in Estonia. "We want to cheer up the Turkish people," the 22-year-old explained. "Our preparations are going really well. I want to play in this game."

Fellow newcomers Yusuf Şimşek and Semih Şentürk were also at the conference, alongside teammate Gökhan. Fenerbahçe striker Semih stated "I wasn't expecting to be called up. But I don't feel nervous. Even if I am used as a sub, I will do my best. I have enough experience from my Under-21 days and Fenerbahçe's UEFA Champions League campaign. We have the strength to beat Norway."

Former Fenerbahçe star Yusuf, now at Denizlispor, spoke about earning his first cap at age 32. "I am here for the first time but the spirit among the players is amazing. I think this will help us get a victory. The Norway match will be hard but we know there will be 70 million Turkish fans behind us."

Lugano Expresses Interest in Juventus?

Lugano Expresses Interest in Juventus?
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce defender Diego Lugano recently sat down with Italy's TuttoSport for an interview in which he discussed his Italian heritage and his possible interest in playing in Serie A. Lugano was asked about his possible move to Italy and if it was indeed a possibility.

Keep in mind the interview has a blatant Italian (and especially Juventus) bias and Lugano was baited with several Juventus-slanted questions. Here is an English transcript of the interview:

We begin with your surname – explain the Italian origins
In my vein runs Italian blood, in fact Piedmontese to be precise, as my great-grandfather Lorenzo was from Alessandria.

So you know that Piedmont is a region and its capital Torino, the city of Juventus?
Of course I do! Juventus is a world famous squad and is particularly followed in Uruguay because in recent years a number of our players have worn the Bianconeri shirt. The most well-known being Paolo Montero and Daniel Fonseca.

And Juventus have had admiring glances over you?
My agent has told me that a lot of clubs are interested in me and it fills me with great pride to know that sides of the calibre of Juventus, Milan and Real Madrid are after you.

And who out of these teams do you prefer?
I am Piedmontese so therefore I want Juventus.

Are you ready to play in Serie A?
Absolutely yes. I won the Intercontinetal Cup with Sao Paulo in 2005 beating Liverpool in Japan, after having won the Copa Libertadores. Also in Brazil I won a national championship and a state championship. I also won the Uruguayan title with Nacional Montevideo and this year I won another national league in Turkiye with Fenerbahce.

President Yıldırım Explains It Explicitly

President Yıldırım Explains It Explicitly
Translated And Edited By Ozgur R. Nazilli

President Aziz Yıldırım is finally fed up with the countless rumors and articles that are made up about Fenerbahce practically ever day of the week. Before boarding the plane that would take him and the team to Kayseri for yesterday's Kayserispor game, he answered the questions of the media.

Regarding the unending stream of transfer rumours: "We keep denying them but it is out of control now. You wrote that Murat Özaydınlı and Neşet Yalçın have signed players on secret contracts. Also for 2 days now, you keep insisting that I went to England to sign Carew. You cannot even agree on who to make the transfer rumors about. One newspaper says Milan Baros, another says Adriano. You mention the transfer fees to be around 25 Million Euros and say that "Fenerbahçe will sign these players". Yet another newspaper says that Carew's club is looking to accept a bid around 4 Million Pounds. These kinds of rumors are harming Fenerbahçe."

On the issue of Appiah and Kezman: " You sound very convinced that both Appiah and Kezman will be leaving the club. You cannot make this decision. That decision is ours to make as the Fenerbahçe Board and the coaching staff. Neither the Board nor Zico's staff is planning a move of this kind."

"We are all seeing the progress of Fenerbahce Futbol Team. Please do not try to ruin this in the hopes of selling a few more newspapers each day. Because I did not go to meet with Carew, and I will not do so. We are not looking to sign him. Carew was on our agenda during the summer, however the price of 10 Million Pounds they asked from us was not acceptable, therefore that transfer story has ended. "

On the very popular topic of Adriano: "First of all, know that Fenerbahce will not buy Adriano for 25 Million Euros. We are not looking to buy a striker, or any other position for that matter. Semih has been called up to the National Squad. We want a player who can score against opponents like PSV Eindhoven and Beşiktaş, and Semih is doing that very well. What more could we want?"

"You are hurting our players' morale by coming up with these kinds of rumors every day. You are trying to demoralize Appiah and Kezman. Stop trying to make your papers more appealing by creating controversies. Please, let us focus on news that will encourage our players. If you keep creating these transfer rumors, our players might start doubting themselves. This will hurt Fenerbahçe."

In answer to yet another question on the subject of transfers: "Fenerbahce is a professional club, and as a professional club we will not take any monetary action outside the transfer windows except paying the player wages. The transfer window is at January, and that is when we will discuss this issue. Besides, we do not have to make a transfer even at the transfer window. We will not pay sums of 25 Million Euros just for the sake of transferring a player, and then put the club into debt. We are not in the bid for Carew, Baros, or Adriano. If we decide to make a transfer, we will sit with our manager (Zico) and discuss this when January comes. We will look into our options depending on the needs of that time. Please, I am asking you to stop these rumors. I went to Geneva for personal business a few days ago, and I will do so again, this time to Zurich, soon. Please do not see this opportunity to fabricate even more transfer rumors."

"Managers (In this context, it means personal agents, not team managers) regularly create rumors about their players in order to increase demand when the time comes. There is no official offer for any of our players yet, but we keep reading that 7 of our players are in high demand from European teams. Do not fall for the tricks of the players' managers."

On a final note, President Yıldırım emphasized that the media should be supportive of Fenerbahçe's players, not trying to unsettle them: "Please do not make up stories regarding Fenerbahçe. Semih is representing Turkey now, yet you keep insisting that we are looking to buy Adriano to replace him. How will he concentrate on his duties for both Fenerbahçe and the National Team, if he keeps reading rumors like this?"

"Appiah will stay, Kezman will stay, and if we need extra players to strengthen our squad, we will talk to Zico when the January transfer window comes. We will not do this talk before January, and we will release a statement regarding it when we actually do it."

President Yıldırım declined to answer questions that were not on this issue of transfer rumors, to show how strongly he felt about them.

Poor Calls Cost Fener Three Points, One Player

Poor Calls Cost Fener Three Points, One Player
Two Egregious Decisions Send Fener Back from Kayseri Empty-Handed
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce went to Kayseri in search of three points, but less than a third of the way into the game, it was clear that they would likely come home empty-handed. Two disastrous calls by the officiating crew allowed Kayserispor to come back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 in front of the home crowd.

Fenerbahce came out attacking on Sunday with the return of Deivid de Souza in the striker position alongside the hot Semih Senturk. Diego Lugano was also back from a one-game absence earlier in the week. Kayseri would have the first shot at goal, however, with a free kick in the 6th minute that Volkan was able to keep out. Less than five minutes later, Edu Dracena would pick up an obvious yellow card after a clumsy tackle. The call allowed Mehmet Topuz a free kick and another shot at goal, but Volkan Demirel was again able to stop the shot. There wasn't much to dispute about the call, but the day would only get worse for Edu and Fenerbahce.

Six and a half minutes later, Fenerbahce got on the board. Stephen Appiah found himself open on the wing with a clear look to get in the ball into close range. Appiah delivered a beautiful left-footed cross into the box that curved perfectly. Semih Senturk was able to jump in and claim Appiah's pass with a header past the goalkeeper to put Fenerbahce up 1-0. Senturk continued his hot streak of fantastic play at the forward position.

The goal allowed Fenerbahce to feel confident early in the match, but the momentum would shift completely just over ten minutes later. In the 28th minute with Kayseri on attack, Edu Dracena was called for a handball that caused him to pick up his second yellow card, resulting in a red. The call meant Fenerbahce would be playing with only ten minute for more than two-thirds of the remainder of the game. However, upon further review, the ball appeared to strike Edu on the lower chest/torso area rather than his arm. The call would stand, however, and Fenerbahce knew they would need to go into a defensive mode to try to salvage a point.

Kayseri would have another great shot at goal ten minutes later, but the shot from the left side of the box was perfectly deflected by Volkan to prevent the goal. Demirel got his right hand on the ball to prevent a sure equalizing goal for Kayserispor. The game was getting more aggressive and sloppy as time went by, with both teams combining for thirteen fouls in the first forty minutes of play.

Roberto Carlos was able to get a free kick opportunity in the 42nd minute, but his shot was off the mark. Less than thirty second later, Kayseri caught Fenerbahce out of position and took advantage. A beautiful cross from the left side found Mehmet Eren unmarked and in great position. Eren, wide open on the right side, found the left back side of the net past Volkan to tie the game at 1-1. Four minutes of stoppage time would keep the first half going, but the teams went into the break knotted up at 1-1.

The second half would only get worse for Fenerbahce. Playing with a man down, the Yellow Canaries were still looking for another goal. The goal appeared as if it might come seven minutes into the second half, when Roberto Carlos had another free kick that gave Diego Lugano an obvious header opportunity to retake the lead. Lugano, however, was first held by his shirt, then thrown down by the Kayseri defender. Instead of what was an obvious yellow card, no card or foul was given and play continued.

Fenerbahce continued a fantastic attack a few minutes later highlighted by some spectacular passing on the Kayseri side of the pitch. Roberto Carlos took advantage of a nice look from the left side in the 56th minute, but the shot was saved, killing Fener's attack.

Seven minutes later, the game would turn again in favor of Kayseri. Roberto Carlos made a rare mistake on defense when he was caught off-guard by Mehmet Eren in front of Fener's goal. However, Eren was so far offsides that the other Fenerbahce defenders stopped play to begin walking back the other direction after awaiting the linesman's flag. Despite Eren being at least seven feet ahead of all Fenerbahce defenders in a clear offsides position, the linesman chose not to raise his flag and allowed the goal. The call was so baffling that players on both sides were looking around in confusion, thinking they had missed the offsides flag by accident.

Fenerbahce was never able to recover after the ridiculous error. Zico would replace Wederson with Colin Kazim-Richards a few minutes later in hopes of sparking one final attack, but it was not to be. Kayserispor took advantage of the officials' generosity to pick up three points at home against the streaking Fenerbahce.

After the match, Zico spoke with reporters and was clearly upset by the officiating in Sunday's game. "Both teams were showing an equally great performance until Edu was shown a red card. I respect this decision, but a Kayserispor player did exactly the same thing and was not punished by a card." Zico went on to show more frustration with the referees in Sunday's match. "In the last minutes of the game there was a lot of arguing and disagreement from both sides. What did the referee do to stop them? He totally lost control over the players. I told my players to calm down and congratulated them because they tried really hard to win."

Fenerbahce will have plenty of time to think about Sunday's loss. The team is off next weekend for international competition. They'll return to Turkcell Super Lig action two weeks from now when they'll host Ankaraspor at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Kadikoy.

The loss means Fenerbahce remains in third place in the standings - one point ahead of fourth-place Besiktas. Kayserispor now moves into fifth place with 20 points, only one behind Besiktas and two points behind Fenerbahce. Galatasaray sits in second place with 25 points, but has an opportunity to tie with Sivasspor for first place if they can defeat Genclerbirligi on Sunday. At publishing time, Genclerbirligi leads Galatasaray 1-0 in the 7th minute of that match.

Gokhan Earns First Cap for Milli Takim
Four Other Fener Footballers Earn Call
By Nathan L. Redd

Gokhan Gonul has been playing exceptional futbol for Fenerbahce recently, and Turkiye's National Coach Fatih Terim has noticed. Terim called Gokhan for his first cap appearance for the upcoming EURO 2008 qualifiers against Norway and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Gokhan Gonul will join four other Fenerbahce footballers on the national squad, including Mehmet Aurelio, Volkan Demirel, Deniz Baris, and Semih Senturk. In addition to Gokhan, four other previously-uncapped players will make their first appearance.

After a tremendous start in EURO 2008 qualifying, Turkiye has slipped into a long slump and currently sits in third place in Group C. They are two points behind Norway, who they will face in Oslo on November 17th. Four days later they'll take on Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Zico Na Rede

Zico Na Rede
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Normally we at Fenerbahce Worldwide cover Fenerbahce and futbol based stories. However, I have by pure luck found a website that would interest anyone who is even remotely interested in Fenerbahce.

I present to you "Zico Na Rede", at " http://ziconarede.com.br/ ". This is Zico's official website, maintained by him and his staff. It has a lot of content, most of which is written by Zico himself. He keeps a blog there which he updates regularly, some sections about his life and past, a fan club section which is unfortunately only in Portuguese, and much more.

It is not our custom to advertise other websites with an article, but this is an exceptional case. Most people do not even know this site exists, and they are missing out on a lot, therefore I decided to feature it at Fenerbahce Worldwide. Hopefully, you will enjoy our manager's website as much as I did.

Turks Tuning in to UEFA Champions League Online

Washington Post Sports Business Blogger Tim Lemke recently wrote a column about the growing market in America of futbol fans. In his column, Lemke mentions that the United States and South America are two of the fastest-growing markets for UEFA's online gamewatch service. Lemke also mentions that Turks are the largest group driving this online product, especially Turks now living around the globe who want to follow their teams.

Fenerbahce 2 - 0 PSV Eindhoven: The Dawn Of A New Era

Fenerbahce 2 - 0 PSV Eindhoven: The Dawn Of A New Era
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Let us be honest now: How many of us would have believed it if someone came to us at the beginning of the season and say "Fenerbahce will have 8 points at the end of the first 4 group matches, and be undefeated in Europe for 9 matches"? I for one would have a hard time imagining something like this. But this exactly is the case now. Fenerbahce is one point behind of Internazionale in a group entirely made up of champions of their respective leagues, with not one single defeat in the last 9 European games (3 from last season, 6 from this one).

Confidence in Fenerbahce was high prior to the PSV game. Even the Dutch media was not very hopeful of a win in Kadikoy, after the 10 men performance of Fenerbahce in Eindhoven, and it happened exactly as they feared.

Fenerbahce dominated the game from the start to the finish, and even though they relaxed and loosened their grip on the game after the second goal, they never relinquished the control to PSV. This is exemplified by the fact that Fenerbahce had 8 shots on target, whereas PSV had only 3. But what is even more important than all the facts and figures is that Fenerbahce has become a European team, and they are playing like one. Even the most cautious media pundits acknowledge this fact now, after Fenerbahce proved this over and over again this season, in every single European game they played. They are not panicking on the field anymore and letting the opposition rule the field, like they used to 2 years ago when they were last in the Champions League. Fenerbahce is not looking up at European teams and hoping to be able to at least match them some day, because now Fener is seeing eye to eye with the very best of Europe.

The PSV game was nothing too spectacular, but the underlying message in the way Fenerbahce played was more satisfying than any sort of scoreline that could be had from an individual game. Fenerbahce has confidence now, they know what they need to do, and execute it to near perfection. What is more astonishing is that just three months ago, a good number of the current Fenerbahce squad was not even at this club, and they became a "team" in a very short period of time. "Team" is especially emphasized because now Fenerbahce is not winning games thanks to individual talent. Now, Fenerbahce is winning because they are doing everything that is right and good as a team. And the star of this show, even though he perhaps has the most modest personality that can be seen in a manager, is undoubtedly Zico.

Zico had a tough time last year, and it is no secret that he was far from being a fan favorite at Fenerbahce. This was due to many reasons, which will not be covered in this article, but he kept his calm and did what he was supposed to do, creating a legendary Fenerbahce in the process. Now, all the Fener fans know that they should be thankful for him and what he has done for Fenerbahce, mainly because if he is allowed to continue at his post for another year or two, he will definitely become the most successful manager in the 101 year history of Fenerbahce. There are some other factors contributing to such a high level of continuous success, like the phenomena that is Roberto Carlos, but they are the topic of another article.

We are witnessing history being made. This year is going to be a milestone in the history of Fenerbahce. Never before have Fenerbahce been so successful in the international arena, but there is more to it than that. Fenerbahce is no more the inexperienced competitor in the European arena. They have yelled out to the world that they are here to stay, and no one can see them as an easy target anymore. Some teams, like Inter, PSV and Anderlecht, learned this the hard way.

More will follow.
