Fenerbahce Takes First Leg 1-0

Fenerbahce Takes First Leg 1-0
Score Leaves Fans Uncomfortable Heading to Belgium
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce took the first leg of their UEFA Champions League battle with Anderlecht, but the scoreline means the second leg is still up for grabs. Alex de Souza scored the game's only goal in the 32nd minute, allowing Fener to win 1-0. Alex's status was unknown until today, as he is still recovering from injury. Diego Lugano also made his debut for Fenerbahce today after being out all summer due to Copa America. Fener is still without star Stephen Appiah.

The score will give Belgian side Anderlecht confidence heading back to Brussels for the second leg. Most Fenerbahce fans were hoping for a 3-0 line or at least a two goal lead on aggregrate. The two sides will face off again in two weeks in Brussels for the second leg.

Photos and analysis from today's match coming shortly.
