Lugano, Uruguay Find Victory in Copa America
By Nathan L. Redd
Fenerbahce defenseman Diego Lugano's Uruguayan side got back on the winning track on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Bolivia. The game's only goal came from Vicente Sanchez in the 59th minute.
Lugano is a vital component and starter for his native Uruguay National Team. The 14-time Copa America champions were shocked in their opening game with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Peru. Uruguay didn't look much better in the first half on Saturday, but found the back of the net with Sanchez only fourteen minutes into the second half. Uruguay had eights shot in the game, with three shots on goal.
Uruguay and Lugano will have a tough test up next, facing the home team Venezuela on July 7. They are still alive in group A, with 3 points after two games. The home side Venezuela sits on top with four points in two games, and Peru sits in second with three points. Uruguay is currently -2 in the goal differential department.
Lugano will join Fenerbahce after the Copa America finishes. He will go through his medical exams at Acibadem Hospital in Istanbul before joining the rest of the squad at their Austrian preseason camp.
