Zico: "We Are Not Champions Yet"

Fenerbahce Manager Zico spoke with the media on Wednesday and cautioned against naming Fenerbahce the Super Lig Champions just yet. “We have deserved the place where we are now, but Fenerbahçe has not yet mathematically clinched the title. We did not give up even after surprising poor results against tiny teams and have a five-point gap with our closest rival three games from the end of the season.”

There is no question that Fenerbahce is in a good position to win the title and have their destiny in their own hands, but five points is certainly not insurmountable with three very tough games remaining. The club will certainly take confidence from the big road win at Besiktas, but beating rivals Trabzonspor and Galatasaray in consecutive weeks away from Kadikoy will not be easy.

Despite the pressure and intensity of handling rival fans, Zico said he has respect for them, even though they can get out of hand. “I had a team to care about. I work for Fenerbahçe. I always respect both the supporters of my own team as well as the suporters of our rivals," he said. "Unpleasant things happened in that game and I hope that those who are responsible will get the punishment they deserve.”

Regarding his team's obstacles on their way to the Turkcell Super Lig title, Zico went on to say “I am not afraid. We deserved the championship and we will win the championship. Now it depends on us, no other team or result, and this gives us extra confidence.”
