Fenerbahce 0 - 0 Gaziantepspor: A Disappointing Dress Rehearsal

Fenerbahce 0 - 0 Gaziantepspor: A Disappointing Dress Rehearsal
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Fenerbahce came away with a goalless draw from a match in which Zico gave a chance to his reserve players, as he said he would.

It was a rather poor match at Kadikoy, with the emptiness of the stadium reflecting the low expectations the fans had. As stated in an interview during the week, Zico fielded an 11 not unlike the one which played against Gaziantep in the league game earlier this year. This time however, the result was a disappointing 0-0.

Or was it? The score was 0-0 alright, but was anyone really disappointed by this? The Fener fans are very disillusioned with the Fortis Turkey Cup since last years eventful cup run, which in the end led to the Board coming to the brink of pulling the team from the league. Last year, President Aziz Yıldırım had declared that they would see Fortis Turkey Cup as a "warm-up" tournament from now on, and let their younger players gain some first team experience. Zico followed suit and the result was 10 new (and young) players on the pitch, and Appiah, who was fielded in order to help with the recovery from his injury by building up his fitness again. The roster was so reserve-oriented that the goalkeeper was Volkan Babacan, the very promising but very inexperienced 19 year old goalie of Fenerbahce, who probably played his first serious match for Fener.

The only exciting moment in the game was when Vederson's fierce drive bounced off the woodwork into the goal and back out again, which was disallowed by the referees. Zico and Vederson both commented on the position and rightfully claimed that our goal was stolen from us. That can be verified by the slow motion replays of the position, where the ball bounces about half a meter into the goal and back out.

In short, the fans were not very disappointed with the end result, since everyone is fully concentrated on the league and the Champions League. The fans would have been happy with a win over Gaziantep, since a win is always a win, but no Fener fan places too much emphasis on the Turkish Cup, let alone the Antep match. Zico is doing the right thing by using the cup games to give the youngsters first team experience, since the Turkish League and the European tournaments are far too valuable to do that. Hopefully, for the rest of the cup, Fener will have a good run, which will in turn help the younger players with their confidence and their developments. After all, that is what the Fortis Turkey Cup is all about for us.

Match Day: Fenerbahce vs. Gaziantepspor

Match Day: Fenerbahce vs. Gaziantepspor
By Nathan L. Redd

Fenerbahce kicks off another Fortis Turkiye Cup on Wednesday at home with Gaziantepspor coming to town. The Yellow Canaries will continue their conquest for the trophy that has eluded them for twenty-four years as they hope to build on last season's success. Fenerbahce got close to redeeming themselves in 2005 and 2006 but finished as runners-up both times. Last season they failed to finish in the top two for the first time since 2004.

The Fortis Turkiye Cup is unchartered waters for Gaziantepspor. The Southern Turkiye side has never finished in the top two for the trophy, nor did they achieve success when it was known as the Federation Cup or the Turkiye Cup. Gaziantepspor finished in eleventh place last season, but the club is hoping for bigger things this year. They currently sit in tenth place in the Turkcell Super Lig with thirteen points, but they find themselves only three points clear of Kayserispor in fifth place. The Anatolian side is hoping to catch Fenerbahce looking ahead a bit on Tuesday. Fenerbahce will play host to derby rivals Besiktas this weekend, and Gaziantep hopes to find Zico's side thinking of Besiktas rather than the other red and black side.

Fenerbahce and Gaziantepspor go to battle on Wednesday, October 31 at 20:00 (2 PM EST in the U.S.).

Fenerbahce women's basketball captured the President's Cup trophy on Tuesday by beating Besiktas Cola Turka 65-58 in Ankara. The championship continues the winning tradition of Fenerbahce's women's basketball team. The club captured the Turkish Championship Title last season, as well as the Turkish Cup.

Former Big East basketball superstar Cappie Pondexter led the Canaries with 16 points. Fellow WNBA alums Nevriye Yilmaz and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 13 and 8 points, respectively.

The game was a tight contest through the first half. Fenerbahce used a third quarter run to build an eight-point lead, then the Canary defense shut down Besiktas to hang on for a seven-point victory.

Tebrikler, Fenerbahce Women's Basketball!!! Although we focus primarily on men's futbol here at Fenerbahce Worldwide, we are fans of all of the club's sports and especially women's sport. We are proud of you!!!

Van Hooijdonk Believes in Fener's Euro Success

Van Hooijdonk Believes in Fener's Euro Success
By Nathan L. Redd

Despite having left Kadikoy, Dutch star Pierre Van Hooijdonk remains one of the most popular players to ever put on the yellow and navy shirt. He earned the adoration and respect of Fenerli's during his tenure with the club, and his name is still mentioned frequently in the streets of Istanbul.

Van Hooijdonk spoke with Sabah recently and stated that he believed Fenerbahce is poised for European success. "Fenerbahçe played great against PSV. Everybody has been talking about it here since the game and no one is giving PSV the odds in the second game in Istanbul. And I feel the same way. I think Fenerbahçe has changed a lot since 2006. I have noticed the discipline Zico has established in the team, which is exactly what the team needs to be successful in the European Cups" he told Sabah. The Dutch star's comments may not sit well with fans in his native Holland, but Van Hooijdonk's loyalties to his former club run deep.

"Fenerbahçe has changed a lot. Zico has brought discipline to the team and I think it is this discipline that will bring Fenerbahçe success in the European Cups."

Fenerbahce-Besiktas Setting Up for Gigantic Clash

Fenerbahce-Besiktas Setting Up for Gigantic Clash
By Nathan L. Redd

There is always excitement in the air once derby week arrives, but this weekend's battle between Fenerbahce and Besiktas is setting up to be a potential legendary match. It appears that Fenerbahce has put their early season struggles behind them, and both squads come in with confidence from their recent games.

Ten days ago, Fenerbahce disposed of Konyaspor behind an offensive explosion of four goals at Sukru Saracoglu. A few days later they picked up one point in their UEFA Champions League contest at PSV Eindhoven. Down to ten men for much of the second half, a draw was satisfactory in the road game. Fener then returned to Istanbul and took care of business against cross-town rivals Kasimpasa with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Fenerbahce claimed the Turkcell Super Lig title last season from Besiktas late in the year, and Zico's group is hoping to produce the same result this year.

Besiktas has been at or near the top of the standings for much of the season already. Last week, however, they pulled off a massive win at Inonu Stadium with a victory over Liverpool in UEFA Champions League action. The Liverpool coaching staff provided the Black Eagles with lots of bulletin board material prior to the match, but it was Besiktas who dominated the English giants in Istanbul. They followed the win with a scoreless draw against Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor, which could have been a case of simply looking ahead to Fenerbahce.

Only two points separate the rivals in the standings, and a victory this weekend could catapult Fenerbahce into a tie with Sivasspor for second place. Fenerbahce will get another warm-up for Besiktas on Wednesday, when they open Fortis Turkish Cup action against Gaziantepspor at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. Besiktas will play host to Caykur Rizespor at Inonu Stadium on Wednesday as well. Both clubs will be looking to fine-tune their game plans and rosters for their upcoming derby. Zico has the luxury of an improved performance recently by oft-maligned striker Deivid de Souza, while Besiktas star Bobo is coming off a fantastic game-winning performance against Liverpool last week. Zico still has many decisions to make regarding the status of Mateja Kezman, but the rest of the squad has picked up the offensive slack in his absence. Fenerbahce has lost only one game in their last ten, but they know they still have much ground to make up in the Super Lig because of the numerous draws they attained to start the season.

Fenerbahce and Besiktas kick-off at 19:00 (12 PM EST in the U.S.) on Saturday, November 3rd from Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Kadikoy.

Fenerbahce Making Moves in Super Lig

Fenerbahce Making Moves in Super Lig
By Nathan L. Redd

After a rough start to the season, Fenerbahce is slowly and quietly climbing back into the Turkcell Super Lig title race. Following two consective Super Lig victories, Fenerbahce has moved into fourth place with nineteen points. They currently sit only five points behind lig-leaders Galatasaray, who reclaimed the top spot with a 2-1 victory over Denizlispor on Sunday.

After a streak of three straight draws, Fenerbahce has won three of the last four matches. In addition, they've lost only one time in their last ten games. After a much-criticized start, Zico and his staff have made adjustments to increase scoring and bolster the defense, including the return of Stephen Appiah to the pitch. The improved play of Volkan Demirel in goal has contributed to the success, and the points have come despite little or no contribution from striker Mateja Kezman. Kezman missed the Konyaspor match last weekend after receiving a red card, and Zico left him off of the roster for the UEFA Champions League contest against PSV Eindhoven. Kezman also missed the 2-1 victory over Kasimpasa over the weekend.

Unlike in previous seasons, there has been no clear-cut star in this year's squad. The scoring contribution has come from expected strikers like Alex de Souza, but Semih Senturk, Edu Dracena, Tumer Metin and others have assisted in Fenerbahce's recent run. In previous years there was a heavy reliance on stars like Tuncay Sanli, Alex de Souza, and Nicolas Anelka to carry the offensive load. The goal-scoring hasn't been as prolific so far this season, but the points have come as a result of more teamwork. In addition, the team has still yet to get their full arsenal of healthy players on the pitch at one time. Stephen Appiah's playing time is increasing, but the star is still not at one hundred percent. Goalkeeper Serdar Kulbilge is still sidelined with a knee injury and isn't expected back in goal anytime soon.

Zico has a good mix of experience and youth on this year's squad, but the chemistry of the team appears to just now be coming together. Veterans Alex de Souza, Stephen Appiah, and Mehmet Aurelio are providing the leadership that Zico needs, while young rising stars Colin Kazim-Richards, Ali Bilgin, and Gokcek Wederson are infusing the squad with young playmaking ability. Fenerbahce had a full compliment of stars in the past like Tuncay and Anelka, but this year may be Zico's biggest accomplishment if he can pull off another title. With nearly one-third of the season under their belts, Fenerbahce is quietly making moves toward another title in the Turkcell Super Lig.

Kasimpasa 1 - 2 Fenerbahce: 15 Minutes > 75 Minutes

Kasimpasa 1 - 2 Fenerbahce: 15 Minutes > 75 Minutes
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Another top quality performance of less than a quarter of the game ensured a victory against Kasimpasa at Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadi for Fenerbahce. The goals of the game for Fener came from a magnificent free-kick by Tumer, and a header by Deivid to a very fine pass by Semih. Tehoue responded with a fierce drive to a ball that he latched on from an awful back pass by Vederson.

Fenerbahce started the game strongly, so strongly that the scoreline was 0-2 just at 15 minutes into the game. The performance was promising to the extent that the fans watching it expected a historic game from Fenerbahce, but what they got instead was a less-than-average match in the remaining 75 minutes.

It is true that Fenerbahce did not knock the socks of Kasimpasa with their performance, however, the question is: Is it right to criticize them for it? Let us take a look at the situation:
Konyaspor, PSV (away), Kasimpasa (away), Gaziantep (Fortis Turkey Cup), Besiktas... These are the games Fenerbahce have played (and will play) in a time span of only 2 weeks. For the Kasimpasa match, Fener had just come back from Eindhoven, in which they played a very stressful match. They had to deal with the young and vigorous Kasimpasa players, the exhaustion from Konya and PSV games, and they had Gaziantep and Besiktas games on their minds.

In short, were we as the fans jubilant with Fener's performance in this game? Absolutely not. But were we content with this performance, and more than happy with the way things have been for the past 3 games in one week? You bet your bottom dollar that we were. Our thanks go to Zico and his students for making this possible.

Kasimpasa - Fenerbahce: Match Preview

Kasimpasa - Fenerbahce: Match Preview
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Fenerbahce will be facing Kasimpasa today at 7 pm (Turkish Time) at Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadyumu. The game looks like it is going to be an enjoyable one, with Kasimpasa being a young and attacking team and Fenerbahce currently being on top of their form.

Zico will look to rest some of his players due to the PSV match in the week, and will most likely bring in Tumer, as he mentioned in his interview that was also published in Fenerbahce Worldwide. Kezman will be unavailable due to the red card he was shown in the Manisa game, and Serdar is still out with an injury. Appiah will probably be given some minutes in accordance with the quest to get him fully fit, but it is yet unknown whether he will be in the starting eleven, or come in as a substitute.

Fenerbahce definitely wants to build on the confident victory of 4-1 against Konyaspor and close down the gap with the leaders (who are, ironically enough, Sivasspor at the moment, not Galatasaray or Besiktas, the two rivals of Fenerbahce) even further. Fener does not have anymore points to throw away due to a after a rather poor start to the season, which spawned a 6 point deficit for Fenerbahce, leaving them in the 6th place after 9 weeks. However, the European form of Fenerbahce has been nothing less than magnificent, and they hold the 2nd place in a group of 4 champions (of their respective leagues). Therefore, the fans are pleased with the season so far, and have every confidence in the belief that Fener will claim their rightful spot in the Turkish league too.

Kasimpasa game will be a good indicator for the rest of the league, and we as Fenerbahce Worldwide know that Fenerbahce will make us proud on that pitch today.

(Editor's Note: Nathan, the owner and fellow author of Fenerbahce Worldwide will be back in his home town today, and hopefully will tell us more about his travel and experiences of Turkey. I personally know that he has had an amazing trip and you will agree with me when you hear more from him. Welcome back Nathan!)

Zico Talks to FB TV

Zico Talks To FB TV
Translated And Edited By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Zico has given an interview to Fatih Demirkol from FB TV prior to today's training. Here is his views on the recent events:

"We had the chance to win the PSV game. We could have won it. Just as we were outplaying PSV everywhere on the pitch and getting the upper hand Deivid was sent off, in a position that deserved a yellow card at worst. In general, we played well against PSV. However, the red card forced us to go on the defensive and protect our goal. We did what we could after Deivid was sent off and came back with a point from an away game that we played with 10 men for half an hour."

When asked to comment on the 108 km ran by the players against PSV: "This statistics show that we pressured the opponent a lot. Because when you make the right runs and do not give the opponent the passing space, your runs will be good and the passing advantage will be yours. That is what we did in this game. PSV is a team who plays especially well on their home grounds. We knew that it would be a tough game. But with smart runs, pressing, tight marking, and attacking as a team, we neutralized their threats. We did not let their strong players perform up to their real standards, and those statistics are a result of this.

On the topic of qualifying from this group: " When we take a look at Group G (Fenerbahce's group) we see that we have 4 champions from 4 different countries. Therefore it would be fair to say that this is a very tough group. With the games we played so far, I can say that things are going as planned. If we had come away with 3 points from the PSV game, we could have said that we had a tremendous advantage at qualifying from the group. But, we still have our fate in our own hands. If we win against PSV at home, the final game against Inter in Italy will not be so important. If we get good results from the two remaining home games, we will easily qualify for the next stage."

Zico was also asked about his opinion on how people have been praising him for recent performances in Europe. His comment: "It makes me happy to see that people who are in the futbol industry are praising me. However, these praises do not mean that my work is done. We are on the right track at the moment. The Turkish futbol is a lot like the Brazilian futbol. Both are focused on scoring goals and having an attacking mentality. Since our players share this mentality, we have an easier job of adopting that style. We have our goals that we want to accomplish. If we cannot reach those goals, the praises do not mean much."

Finally, about the game this weekend against Kasimpasa: "We have to play with the same passion we had in the Konyaspor game. We need to get back to the top. We need to reconcile the unnecessary points we dropped and think about how we might get back the top spot. In this, the players have a huge responsibility, and they are aware of it. We will get the result we want from the Kasimpasa game too."
"I might change the first eleven a bit. I want to utilize Tumer. Tumer has just recovered from an injury but he became fit faster than we expected. There might be some other changes too but right now the player I have in mind is Tumer."

On a side note, Zico confirmed that he will be using non-first team players in the Fortis Turkey Cup and trying them out. This should be a good opportunity for the likes of Ilhan Parlak and Gurhan Gursoy to prove themselves to Zico.

PSV Eindhoven 0 - 0 Fenerbahce: Solid Form Continues in Europe

PSV Eindhoven 0 - 0 Fenerbahce: Solid Form Continues in Europe
By Ozgur R. Nazilli

Fenerbahce continue their unbeaten run with a goalless draw in Eindhoven against PSV, in a game that they played with 10 men for almost half an hour. Fenerbahce, who sits in second place in the group now after Inter beat CSKA Moscow 2-1, is the only team that has yet to lose in the group.

Even though PSV Eindhoven was a much feared away game by the Fener fans prior to the game, the Yellow Canaries were in control for the majority of the game. It was as though Fenerbahce was the home side and PSV were playing for the first time in that stadium. The contribution of the fans cannot be underestimated in this strong performance, since Fenerbahce chants were almost always more audible than PSV chants, even from the television broadcast.

Fenerbahce kept PSV under constant pressure and they definitely had more goal scoring opportunities, but they could not make the finishing touches, ending a game they dominated with only one point. PSV could not find the back of the net, even though most of the Fenerbahce defense had yellow cards (Lugano, Deniz, Aurelio) and would be holding themselves back in order to avoid a second card.

The most amazing thing about today's performance was to see how far Fenerbahce has come since the last time we played in the Champion's League. Now, with the Anderlecht games, Fener has played 5 matches in the European arena this season, and aside from being unbeaten, their performances have become very confident. Even though there are many youngsters in the team who are playing for the first time in the Champions League, Fenerbahce never goes into a game with anything but a win on their minds and this shows in their performances. The group games have proven that neither pushing Anderlecht out of the tournament nor the Inter win were by luck. Fenerbahce has become a completely different team than the one that was in the Champions League 2 years ago. Today, even though Fener played the last half hour of the game with 10 men, they were never outplayed on the pitch and each and every player fought for Fenerbahce, without any fear of losing the game. This confidence and quality is what brings success in the international tournaments. This, above all else, is what pleased me with the PSV game.

Now, Fenerbahce has 5 points from the first 3 games of the group. Now, Fener will play two home games and one away game, which is an advantageous fixture for us. If Fener wins one of the home games and draws the other, we will most likely qualify for the second round. However, truth be told, I am expecting much more than that from Fenerbahce by looking at the performances they have been giving in the Champions League. I would not be suprised if we finished this group with 11 or 12 points. This would have been a dream not too long ago, but now, thanks to Zico and the likes of Alex and Roberto Carlos, Fenerbahce has become a "team", not a "group of skilled players" like they used to be...

Success will follow.

Our Hearts Go Out to Turkiye

Our Hearts Go Out to Turkiye
By Nathan L. Redd

In light of the recent terror attacks conducted against Turkish soldiers, it is my desire to offer our sincerest condolences from Fenerbahce Worldwide. The acts carried out are terrible conflicts against a proud and wonderful country. We were terribly saddened to hear of the loss of the Turkish soldiers over the weekend and it is obvious to me while I'm here that the loss has affected the Turkish people greatly.

Our hearts go out to Turkiye during this time. It is our hope that these terrible actions cease and it is my prayer that Allah watches over and protects Turkiye and its wonderful people.
